Bennington Chevy’s Guide To Storing Your Summer Tires:

Keep them clean.

  • This is probably the best advice that you can receive when it comes to storing tires. During use, your tires accumulate brake dust, dirt, road grime, and all sorts of other nasty gunk which can cause tire damage if it sits on your tires for a long period of time (aka fall & winter months!) So, grab some soap, a tire brush, and a bucket of water and get to cleaning before storing these bad boys away for the winter. We recommend using an approved wheel cleaner, avoid using tire gloss or dressing, and allow your tires to completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Airtight is right.

  • Once your tires are clean and properly dried, you want to place them into a large, dark, airtight plastic bag. Lawn and garden bags work perfectly or you can choose to purchase tire storing bags online. Your choice! Secure the bag with a zip tie or tape after removing as much air as possible. This will keep oil compounds from escaping.

Upright is important.

  • Next, choose to store your tires upright and avoid stacking them if possible. If you keep your wheels mounted, you will want to stack them. If you choose not to use bags, store tires white to white and black to black. This will keep your tires clean!

Store your tires like a pro.

  • Keeping your tires out of direct sunlight and away from ozone sources is a MUST. Intense heat can damage your tires. So keep out of direct sunlight (yes, even in the winter), away from electric motors, furnaces, or basement sump pumps. Tires like it cool and dry. So places like basements, climate-controlled garages or workshops are the best places to store your tires. Anywhere that is exposed to extreme temperatures cold or hot and wet, is a no-go. Not going to be using your vehicle for the winter? Well, it’s still important to move that vehicle to ensure that your tire’s rubber compounds are lubricated and supple. This will help relieve stress on the tires and keep them healthy!

Are your tires ready to take on winter roads? Well they might just be past the point of no return if you’ve been rocking them since last season! Your tires help keep a grip on the road and keep you from sliding and slipping on wet, muddy, sandy, and rough terrain! If your tire’s tread has been balding, then you’re driving with little to no grip. But don’t worry Bennington Chevy has listed our simple and easy ways of checking your treads depth down below using nothing more than your spare change! Check out our tips and remember to schedule your service appointment for your tire replacement at Bennington Chevy in Bennington, VT.

Bennington Chevy’s Tips For Checking Your Tire Tread:

The Penny Test:

  • Insert a penny right into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head facing upside down in the tread facing toward you. Once the penny is inserted, if you can see the entire head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and that means you need to replace your tires ASAP.

The Quarter Test:

  • As we did before, place the quarter upside down into the tread groove with Washington’s head facing toward you. If the tread reaches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining, AKA you’re tires are still in good shape and there’s nothing to worry about!

Tread Wear Indicator

  • If you don’t have any coins laying around, take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded onto the tread of your tires. These bars are found at the bottom of the tread grooves in multiple spots. When these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. This is a visible indication that you need new tires for your vehicle!

Bennington Chevrolet’s 5 Must-Have Truck Accessories:

1. Battery Powered Bed Lighting

  • The bed of your pickup can get pretty dark, making it challenging to locate your gear, especially as we transition into darker seasons. Say goodbye to fumbling in the dark with battery-powered bed lighting. For added convenience, consider removable bed lighting, allowing you to use the light in various situations beyond your truck bed.

2. Bed Liner

  • If your pickup is a workhorse, investing in a bed liner is a no-brainer. Bed liners protect your bed from unsightly scratches and dents that can occur during heavy-duty tasks. With various liner options available, you can choose the one that suits your needs best. Plus, a bed liner makes transporting materials like dirt, gravel, and mulch a breeze.

3. Running Boards

  • Ever struggled to gracefully enter your truck, resorting to a running start? We’ve all been there. Running boards are a game-changer, solving this problem with ease. Your passengers will also thank you for this handy addition that makes getting in and out of your pickup a breeze.

4. Tailgate Assist

  • Here’s an accessory that’s not just convenient but also a safety essential. Tailgate assists prevent your tailgate from slamming down when you open it, ensuring your fingers and cargo stay safe. No more worrying about the tailgate suddenly dropping when accessing your truck bed.

5. All-Weather Floor Mats

  • Whether you drive a pickup, SUV, or sedan, all-weather floor mats are a smart investment. These mats are designed to withstand spills and endure challenging weather conditions. Opt for mats with raised edges to contain spills effectively. Cleaning up messes is a breeze with these mats, and they keep your vehicle looking sharp.

In conclusion, these five accessories are game-changers when it comes to optimizing your pickup truck. They enhance convenience, safety, and functionality, making your truck the ultimate companion for work and play. As we head into the chillier Fall and Winter months, one of the most critical vehicle maintenance concerns to avoid is a dead or faulty battery. Bennington Chevrolet’s Guide To Changing Your Battery:

  • First, make sure your vehicle is in park with the engine turned off. Next pop open the hood and locate the battery. If you were previously driving the vehicle, be sure to give your vehicle enough time to cool down before working on anything under the hood. Then, detach the negative cable (black) from the battery. Loosen the nut with a wrench, twist the end of the cable with your hand and pull the cable away from the battery terminal. Repeat with the positive cable (red).
  • Next unclamp the battery hold-down clamp from the battery– you may need to use a wrench or a socket and ratchet. Once the clamp is off, remove the battery from the holding tray. Be aware that while compact, batteries are heavy, so lift with your legs!
  • Clean the holding tray, cables, and nuts/ bolts of dirt, debris, and buildup using a battery cleaning solution. You want to use an anti-corrosive cleaning solution and you want to pay extra attention to any spots with corrosion, this could cause problems down the road if not addressed. After cleaning, be sure the parts are completely dry before inserting the new battery.
  • Insert the new battery and secureit in place with the hold-down clamp. Apply an anti-corrosive solution to both terminal ends. Once this is completed, attach the positive battery cable first and then the negative cable. Make sure you tighten both terminals to ensure you have a tight and secure connection.
  • Check the security of the battery, your battery should not be able to wiggle or move once inside the holding tray. If your battery is able to move, tighten the clamp and be sure the cables are tight and secure, as well. Before closing up, try starting your vehicle to ensure that everything is working properly. Then you should be good to go!

And if you haven’t serviced your ride in a while, be sure to schedule a service appointment today and skip the line later!

Bennington Chevrolet’s Pet Travel Checklist:

Lead, Collar, Leash, and ID tag:

  • The last thing you want to happen is your dog to run off in a place they don’t know. So, make sure you keep your dog on their leash unless you’re in a leashless allowed area with an identification tag that has your phone number on it just in case!

Food, water, bowls:

  • Pups need to stay hydrated too! Especially if you’re both going out to do lots of activities!

Doggy baggies:

  • Bring waste disposable bags and be responsible for your pets “droppings”.

Crates and restraints:

  • Even if your dog is usually a happy traveler, it isn’t safe for them to roam freely throughout the car, in the case of an accident.

Toys!!!:

  • Always bring along a ball or tug of war toy to really get out all that extra energy your pup may have so that they’ll be ready to crash and relax later!

Inflation has led to an increase in prices across various sectors, and fuel costs are no different. Considering daily commutes, school drop-offs, and upcoming late-summer journeys, we understand the essential nature of gasoline. Thus, we invite you to carefully consider the suggestions provided below. If you’re interested in driving a Chevrolet model with better fuel efficiency, take the opportunity to explore Bennington Chevrolet’s new inventory through our user-friendly online platform today!

Bennington Chevrolet’s Fuel Saving Tips:

Keep Track Of Your Mileage

  • Knowing what mileage you’re getting in real time compared to what you got last time you were out and about. Most newer vehicles have this function and allow you to view it in your virtual cockpit and you can compare your driving performance to the EPA estimated MPG.

Try And Avoid Unnecessary Braking

  • Be aware of your surroundings and diligently obey speed limits. This will help keep you from having to brake quickly to avoid obstacles and will hopefully keep you in rhythm with the rest of traffic so you won’t have to speed up or slow down too often.

Drive Using Momentum

  • When you’re headed uphill, it takes a lot more effort to maintain speed than it does going down, so give the car a break and let yourself lose a few mph on the way up.  Your car burns the most gas when it’s forced into high-load situations, so give it a break if you can.

Map Out Your Route Beforehand

  • Take the path with fewer stoplights, not as much traffic and, yes, lower speed limits. Even if you save 0.1 gallons of gas each day, you’ll save more than over a hundred dollars per year!

Drive “Around” Rush Hour

  • Most office buildings let out around the same hours on week days and we know you can’t just sit there till the roads are clear. Well, try alternate routes. It might add a few minutes to your commute but will save you more gas than having to deal with stop-and-go traffic!
