Winter Maintenance

Five Winter Driving Problems to Avoid with Easy Chevrolet Vehicle Maintenance

Vermont winters are no joke. Snow, sleet, icy mornings, it all puts extra stress on your vehicle. And while your Chevrolet is built to handle tough conditions, skipping essential winter Chevrolet vehicle maintenance can leave you stuck on the side of the road instead of enjoying the season. To keep your drives safe and stress-free, here are five things you might run into if you don’t take the time to winterize your Chevy. 1. Slipping and Sliding from Worn Tires Cold temperatures cause tire pressure to drop, and worn tread reduces grip when you need it most. Without proper traction, you’re more likely to slide on icy or snowy roads. Checking your tire pressure regularly and swapping to fresh (or even winter) tires can make all the difference. 2. Longer Stopping Distances with Weak Brakes Winter roads demand quick response. If your brakes are worn or rust has built up from wet conditions, stopping suddenly can become a risky challenge. A quick brake inspection now helps you avoid dangerous surprises later. 3. Dead Batteries on Freezing Mornings Few things are worse than running late on a freezing morning only to find your battery can’t crank the engine. Cold weather makes it harder for your Chevy’s battery to deliver power. Testing or replacing it before the temperature dips can save you from an untimely jump-start. 4. Poor Visibility from Dim Lights and Low Fluids When snow is falling or fog sets in, you’ll want every bit of visibility you can get. Burned-out headlights, wiper blades that streak, or low washer fluid can all make driving more dangerous. A multi-point vehicle inspection check ensures you see, and are seen, clearly. 5. A Cabin That Can’t Keep You Warm Your heating system isn’t just for comfort, it helps keep windows defrosted and visibility clear. If it’s not working properly, you’ll be left with a cold commute and foggy glass. Don’t wait until the first deep freeze to find out your heater needs repair. Car Maintenance Tips

Spring Into Smooth Driving: Essential Car Maintenance Tips from Bennington Chevrolet

As winter fades away and spring arrives in Bennington, VT, it’s time to give your vehicle the attention it deserves. The colder months can take a toll on your car, from icy roads to salt buildup, making spring maintenance essential to ensure safe and smooth driving. At Bennington Chevrolet, we’ve put together a spring car care checklist to help you protect your investment, improve performance, and prevent costly repairs. 1. Inspect and Replace Windshield Wipers Winter ice and snow can leave your wipers cracked and ineffective, making it difficult to see clearly in spring showers. Replace worn-out wipers to ensure optimal visibility during rainy days in Bennington and beyond. 2. Check Tire Pressure and Alignment Cold temperatures can cause tire pressure fluctuations, leading to uneven wear and poor fuel efficiency. As the weather warms up: Check tire pressure and adjust it according to your owner’s manual. Inspect tread depth for signs of excessive wear. Schedule a wheel alignment to prevent drifting or uneven handling, especially if you hit potholes during winter. If you used winter tires, now is the time to swap them out for all-season or summer tires for better efficiency and performance. 3. Test and Maintain Your Brakes Winter driving can be tough on your brake system. If you hear grinding, squealing, or feel vibrations while braking, it’s time for an inspection. Even if your brakes seem fine, it’s smart to have them checked to ensure maximum safety. 4. Check Your Battery’s Strength Extreme cold can weaken your car battery, increasing the risk of failure just when you need it most. To avoid getting stranded: Check your battery’s voltage and clean any corrosion from the terminals. If your battery is more than three years old, consider replacing it to prevent unexpected issues. 5. Test the Air Conditioning System With warmer temperatures on the way, you don’t want to find out your A/C isn’t working on the first hot day. Test your air conditioning now, and if it’s not blowing cold air, you may need a refrigerant recharge or system inspection. 6. Change the Oil and Fluids Winter driving conditions can cause oil to thicken, making your engine work harder. A spring oil change ensures proper lubrication and helps maintain engine efficiency. Additionally, check and top off other essential fluids, including: Transmission fluid Coolant Brake fluid Windshield washer fluid 7. Deep Clean Inside and Out Winter road salt and debris can cause rust and corrosion, especially on the undercarriage. A thorough exterior wash and wax will help protect your vehicle’s paint. Inside, vacuum carpets and replace cabin air filters to reduce allergens and improve air quality as pollen levels rise in Bennington and the surrounding Vermont area. Spring Into Smooth Driving with Bennington Chevrolet Regular seasonal maintenance extends your vehicle’s lifespan and keeps you safe on the road. Whether you need an oil change, brake inspection, battery test, or tire service, the certified technicians at Bennington Chevrolet are ready to help. Schedule your spring maintenance appointment today at Bennington Chevrolet, 24 Performance Drive, Bennington, VT 05201, and keep your vehicle running at its best all season long!

Winter Car Maintenance at Bennington Chevrolet

Winter Car Maintenance: Making Your Vehicle Ready for the Cold Weather

Winter can be a harsh season for your vehicle, with freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and slippery roads posing serious driving challenges. With the right preparation, you can keep your car running smoothly and stay safe on the road this season. Here's a guide to essential winter car maintenance, along with key items to include in an emergency kit, so you're ready for anything this winter season throws your way. 1. Check Your Tires Winter driving often means dealing with slick and unpredictable roads. Snow, ice, and freezing rain can make for treacherous conditions, so it's important to ensure your tires are up to the task. Proper tread depth is critical for maintaining grip and stability. It’s recommended that you replace tires when the tread depth falls below 2/32 of an inch. However, for extra peace of mind during winter, you may want to opt for a little more tread. If you live in Vermont with frequent snow and ice, consider switching to winter tires. These tires are designed to stay softer in low temperatures, offering better traction and performance on snowy or icy roads. Also, make sure to check your tire pressure regularly, as cold weather can cause tires to lose air more quickly. Underinflated tires can negatively affect handling, fuel efficiency, and safety. You can read more about tire basics here at Bennington Chevrolet. 2. Test Your Battery Cold temperatures can be tough on your car's battery. Before winter hits, test your battery to ensure it can withstand the season’s cold. If your battery is over three years old, it may be a good idea to replace it now. Let our factory-trained experts diagnose, service and – if needed – replace the battery in your vehicle before the snow flies! 3. Top Off Your Fluids Cold weather can affect the performance of various fluids in your car. Here's what you should pay attention to: Antifreeze: This vital fluid prevents your engine from freezing in cold temperatures. Make sure the ratio of antifreeze to water is suitable for the weather in our area. Windshield Wiper Fluid: Invest in a winter formula that resists freezing, so your wipers can effectively clear snow, ice, and road grime from your windshield. Oil: In very cold temperatures, consider switching to winter-grade oil. This will help your engine run more smoothly during the frigid months. 4. Inspect Brakes and Belts Brakes are under more stress during winter driving, particularly on slippery or icy roads. Before the cold weather arrives, make sure your brake pads and rotors are in good condition. Worn brakes can increase stopping distances and compromise your safety. Similarly, belts and hoses can become brittle and more prone to breaking in cold temperatures. Inspect your car’s belts and hoses for any signs of wear or cracking to avoid breakdowns in the middle of winter. 5. Add an Emergency Kit to Your Vehicle Even with the best winter prep, emergencies can still happen. Whether you're stranded in the snow or dealing with a breakdown, having an emergency kit can make a huge difference. Here are the essentials to pack: Blankets or Sleeping Bags: Stay warm if you’re stuck for an extended period. Non-Perishable Snacks and Bottled Water: In case you’re waiting for help. Flashlight and Extra Batteries: For visibility in the dark. Portable Phone Charger: So you can stay connected and call for help if needed. First Aid Kit: For treating minor injuries on the go. Ice Scraper and Small Shovel: To clear snow and ice from your car. Traction Aids: Sand, cat litter, or traction mats can help you get unstuck if you're stranded. Jumper Cables: For jump-starting your battery if it dies. Packing these items into your car ensures you’ll be prepared for the unexpected, whether it’s a breakdown or getting stuck in the snow. Winter-Ready Maintenance is Critical Winter driving presents unique challenges that can take a toll on your vehicle’s performance. Cold temperatures make vehicles more susceptible to mechanical issues, while icy roads and poor visibility increase the risk of accidents. Proper maintenance not only keeps your car running efficiently, but it also helps prevent breakdowns, ensures your safety, and provides peace of mind on the road. By following these essential winter maintenance tips and preparing an emergency kit, you’ll be ready to face whatever winter throws your way. It’s better to be proactive now than to be stuck with a breakdown later. For extra peace of mind as winter approaches, schedule your next service at Bennington Chevrolet. Our certified technicians can perform a thorough inspection of your vehicle, checking everything from tires and battery strength to your brakes. We’ll make sure your car is in top condition to handle the challenges of winter driving. Don’t take chances with your safety. Let our experts ensure your car is ready for whatever winter has in store. Schedule your visit today and drive confidently into the season, knowing your vehicle is winter-ready.

Bennington Chevy 5 Essential Summer Services: Check your coolant system When temperatures are rising, it’s important to keep cool. Ourselves and our vehicles. In addition to checking up on the coolant fluid levels, it’s important to check the state of the hoses and the coolant reservoir. Any leaks should be addressed as soon as possible. And hoses should be firm. Windshield wipers While it is summer, it is bound to rain at a point to help cool things off. That means you need a good set of wipers that will keep excess water off your windshield and your vision clear. A good habit to start is checking on your wipers every time you stop for gas or change them every oil change. Engine belts Over time your engine belt can become loose, deteriorate, and start to squeal. It’s important to have your engine belt checked to ensure there are no cracks, missing pieces, and that there is the right amount of tension. Tires While you should be checking your tires year-round, summer is a great time to ensure that tire pressure levels are correct and you still have a good amount of tread still. Summer is the season of road trips, so it’s important to keep up to date with your tires. Plus, be sure to check up on your spare tire as well. Air Filters Winter is known for clogging your windshield-washer nozzle and your car’s air filters. So, when summer hits, it’s important to make sure these areas are clean and ready to go. Sometimes you can change filters yourself but if you’re not sure, ask a technician!

Store Your Summer Tires With These Tips From Bennington Chevy | Bennington, VT

With holiday travel less than a couple of days away, it is the perfect time to switch to your winter tires! That means you should find a spot to store your summer tires for the next season! But, what's the best way to keep your tires road ready? This week, Bennington Chevy has your easy-to-follow guide to help you get the most out of your tires. Take a look below and put this plan to good use. Oh! And if you’re ready to upgrade your tires, stop in to see our team! We will be more than happy to help you get a new set of tires onto your CJDR and back on the road in no time! Schedule your service appointment with us today! Bennington Chevy’s Guide To Storing Your Summer Tires: Keep them clean. This is probably the best advice that you can receive when it comes to storing tires. During use, your tires accumulate brake dust, dirt, road grime, and all sorts of other nasty gunk which can cause tire damage if it sits on your tires for a long period of time (aka fall & winter months!) So, grab some soap, a tire brush, and a bucket of water and get to cleaning before storing these bad boys away for the winter. We recommend using an approved wheel cleaner, avoid using tire gloss or dressing, and allow your tires to completely dry before moving on to the next step. Airtight is right. Once your tires are clean and properly dried, you want to place them into a large, dark, airtight plastic bag. Lawn and garden bags work perfectly or you can choose to purchase tire storing bags online. Your choice! Secure the bag with a zip tie or tape after removing as much air as possible. This will keep oil compounds from escaping. Upright is important. Next, choose to store your tires upright and avoid stacking them if possible. If you keep your wheels mounted, you will want to stack them. If you choose not to use bags, store tires white to white and black to black. This will keep your tires clean! Store your tires like a pro. Keeping your tires out of direct sunlight and away from ozone sources is a MUST. Intense heat can damage your tires. So keep out of direct sunlight (yes, even in the winter), away from electric motors, furnaces, or basement sump pumps. Tires like it cool and dry. So places like basements, climate-controlled garages or workshops are the best places to store your tires. Anywhere that is exposed to extreme temperatures cold or hot and wet, is a no-go. Not going to be using your vehicle for the winter? Well, it’s still important to move that vehicle to ensure that your tire’s rubber compounds are lubricated and supple. This will help relieve stress on the tires and keep them healthy!

Spare Change May Spare You From Having To Change Your Tires! | Bennington, VT

Are your tires ready to take on winter roads? Well they might just be past the point of no return if you've been rocking them since last season! Your tires help keep a grip on the road and keep you from sliding and slipping on wet, muddy, sandy, and rough terrain! If your tire’s tread has been balding, then you’re driving with little to no grip. But don’t worry Bennington Chevy has listed our simple and easy ways of checking your treads depth down below using nothing more than your spare change! Check out our tips and remember to schedule your service appointment for your tire replacement at Bennington Chevy in Bennington, VT. Bennington Chevy’s Tips For Checking Your Tire Tread: The Penny Test: Insert a penny right into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head facing upside down in the tread facing toward you. Once the penny is inserted, if you can see the entire head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and that means you need to replace your tires ASAP. The Quarter Test: As we did before, place the quarter upside down into the tread groove with Washington’s head facing toward you. If the tread reaches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining, AKA you’re tires are still in good shape and there’s nothing to worry about! Tread Wear Indicator If you don’t have any coins laying around, take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded onto the tread of your tires. These bars are found at the bottom of the tread grooves in multiple spots. When these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. This is a visible indication that you need new tires for your vehicle!
