Start Your Fall Off Right With A Fresh Battery! | Bennington, VT

As we head into the chillier Fall and Winter months, one of the most critical vehicle maintenance concerns to avoid is a dead or faulty battery. Fortunately, Bennington Chevrolet has created a comprehensive DIY Battery Replacement guide to help you ensure your vehicle is equipped with a brand-new battery for the challenging road conditions ahead. You can find this guide below. If you prefer not to handle vehicle maintenance yourself due to concerns about causing damage or if you simply lack the time in your busy schedule, our expert service team is more than willing to take care of the job for you. Don't hesitate to schedule a service appointment at Bennington Chevrolet today! Bennington Chevrolet’s Guide To Changing Your Battery: First, make sure your vehicle is in park with the engine turned off. Next pop open the hood and locate the battery. If you were previously driving the vehicle, be sure to give your vehicle enough time to cool down before working on anything under the hood. Then, detach the negative cable (black) from the battery. Loosen the nut with a wrench, twist the end of the cable with your hand and pull the cable away from the battery terminal. Repeat with the positive cable (red). Next unclamp the battery hold-down clamp from the battery– you may need to use a wrench or a socket and ratchet. Once the clamp is off, remove the battery from the holding tray. Be aware that while compact, batteries are heavy, so lift with your legs! Clean the holding tray, cables, and nuts/ bolts of dirt, debris, and buildup using a battery cleaning solution. You want to use an anti-corrosive cleaning solution and you want to pay extra attention to any spots with corrosion, this could cause problems down the road if not addressed. After cleaning, be sure the parts are completely dry before inserting the new battery. Insert the new battery and secureit in place with the hold-down clamp. Apply an anti-corrosive solution to both terminal ends. Once this is completed, attach the positive battery cable first and then the negative cable. Make sure you tighten both terminals to ensure you have a tight and secure connection. Check the security of the battery, your battery should not be able to wiggle or move once inside the holding tray. If your battery is able to move, tighten the clamp and be sure the cables are tight and secure, as well. Before closing up, try starting your vehicle to ensure that everything is working properly. Then you should be good to go!

Use Your Spare Change To Check Your Tire Treads! | Bennington, VT

Can you remember the last time you changed out your tires? Or even checked your treads? Well spring is right around the corner and that means rainy roads, dramatic temperature changes, and all sorts of other hazardous road conditions. If your tire’s treads are worse for wear, then you’re driving with little to no grip! To keep you safe on the road ahead, Bennington Chevy has put together three easy ways of checking your tread depth using spare change! Check out our tips below and be sure to schedule your service appointment for your tire change at Bennington Chevy today! Bennington Chevy's Tire Tread Tips: The Penny Test: Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head facing upside down and toward you. Once the penny is inserted, if you can see the entire head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and that means your tire is too bald and unsafe to drive on. The Quarter Test: Just like with the penny test, place the quarter upside down into the tread groove with Washington’s head facing toward you. If the tread reaches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining, meaning your tire is still in good shape! Tread Wear Indicator Don’t have any coins laying around? Take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded onto the tread of your tires. These bars are found at the bottom of the tread grooves in multiple spots. When these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. This is a visible indication that you need new tires for your vehicle!

Bennington Chevy’s Leaking Ride Guide! | Bennington VT

Now that Fall has really begun, there is no better time to make sure your ride is in tip-top shape for the chillier weather that is ahead of us. But after all of your summer travel, your vehicle imay be a bit worse for wear. An issue many drivers run into is a mysterious fluid leak from one or more parts of your vehicle. So, when should you be concerned, and more importantly how do you know what fluid is leaking? Lucky for you, this week we have a color guide and some extra direction to help you figure out what could be leaking from your vehicle. Check it out below! And if you don’t have the time or tools to take care of this issue yourself, schedule a service appointment at Bennington Chevy service center and let our experienced technicians take care of it for you! Bennington Chevy Leaking Ride Guide: LIght brown to black: If the fluid leaking from your vehicle is a brownish/black color, chances are its motor oil. This can leak from various spots of your vehicle, but if it is leaking from the center and the odor smells like rotten eggs, the culprit could be a lube oil leak. This won’t stop your vehicle dead, but it means that there is an ongoing issue and you should bring your vehicle in for a professional examination Light yellow to dark brown: Brake fluid stars out as a clear/yellow color and as it ages it becomes dark brown, similar to motor oil. An easy way to distinguish is simple, just feel the fluid. If the fluid feel slippery, it’s likely brake fluid. If this is the case, your vehicle not safe to drive and you’re going to want to bring it in for repair as soon as possible. Red(ish): If the fluid leaking from your vehicle is a red or reddish color, it’s generally power steering fluid. Power steering fluid will leak from under the front part of your car and is thin in texture. If this is the case, there is an issue with the power steering pump. Orange: If the leak is from the center of your vehicle and the fluid is an orange/reddish-brown color, it could be transmission fluid. However, rust from your radiator mixing with an antifreeze leak can appear orange-ish as well. However, antifreeze will be thin and can leak from anywhere, which could help you determine the difference. Yellow, Green, or Pink: These leaks will be the easiest to spot, and typically the simplest to diagnose. More times than not, the cause of such bright puddles is a simple coolant leak. In these cases, your vehicle’s age comes into play. Older vehicles tend to blow off a bit of coolant when the engine gets too hot, so a few little spots are nothing to worry about. If your vehicle is newer, this coolant shouldn’t be dripping any excess liquids so it might be a good idea to bring it in for a look. Clear: If the fluid leaking from your vehicle looks like water, it probably is water. The air conditioning can build up excess condensation and result in puddles of water underneath your vehicle. This occurs in properly running cars, only be worried if it becomes constant and a lot.
